One of the things I've noticed as the years have passed is that my skin suddenly gets these scaly patches. This occurs on my face, the back side of my arms and on my legs.
As I've never suffered from psoriasis or extremely dry skin this was alarming to me. I have always been very good about moisturizing my face but not so much my body. I use moisturizing body washes and if I have been out in the sun I may apply body lotion after a shower but typically I'm not an "all over" moisturizer.
So when these patches began appearing I knew I had to do something. I've figured out a way to combat these patches when they appear and I like to think that they appear far less often since I've began moisturizing more religiously.
You may think that the first step to getting rid of those scaly patches is to scrub off all the dry skin. Exfoliation is a big part of making them go away but it's important to use the right product, some exfoliation products can cause irritation and even pain on extremely dry patches. I've found that a moisturizing sugar scrub is effective.
Sugar Scrub is easy to make just combine 1/2 cup of white sugar with a few teaspoons of olive oil. Or you can purchase a sugar scrub like Tree Hut Shea Sugar Body Scrub (link below). Use it after your normal body wash in the shower to rub gently on the dry patches for a few moments then rinse with warm water.
After using the sugar scrub dry off and apply a body lotion that includes natural ingredients. I love Aveeno Active Naturals oatmeal lotion. It leaves my skin soft and supple without that heavily lotioned feeling and it's even light enough to use on my face.
Use lotion every day and whip out the sugar scrub when you feel an area that is getting dry or scaly despite your moisturizing attention.
Keep in mind that psoriasis is a different condition that will likely require different treatment options and we'll discuss that in another post.
