As I've been fighting (succumbing to) my middle age weight gain I've found that knowing that I need to lose about 60 pounds is almost a sure way to ensure that I won't. For the past few years I've decided that the first of the year would be a good time to start. I've come up with serious exercise and diet plans...then real life sets in and before I know it I'm sitting on the couch with my laptop all day.
I don't actually eat a lot, but the fact that I'm sedentary all day, every day means that I'm not burning the calories I do eat or the fat that is stored in my body either. I have absolutely no muscle tone and I know that I have no one to blame but myself.
This year I decided to skip the usual plan and make short term goals that would help me build up to actually exercising and being more active. As a freelancer I am home all day- it's up to me to make myself get off my ever expanding butt and do something. So I'm not counting calories or striving (at the moment) to lose 60 pounds before summer- I know that won't happen.
So for now, my effort to get in shape involves spending at least 10 minutes every hour on my feet. Whether this means going to the kitchen to do a few dishes, vacuuming or taking the dog for a quick walk I'm getting about 80 minutes (during a normal workday) of activity.
Using the AbLounge, the home gym, or doing a 10 minute trainer program is also a great way to use one or more of my 10 minute increments. The 10 minute trainer is wonderful with several different focus areas and 10 minutes dedicated to each. (link at the bottom of the post) So when I use those I get cardio, toning, stretching, core workout and more. They do get easier the more you do them!
There are women who are dedicated and capable of jumping into a fitness program and sticking with it, then there are people like me who have to slowly ease into the whole idea of losing weight, getting in shape and being healthy.
What are your short term goals for losing weight or shaping up?
My name is Suz and I'm just an everyday woman who is trying to figure out when exactly I turned old. I'm not a doctor or an expert- what I am is a woman who wants to know for myself and to share what I learn with other women.
