Despite the name, Momnesia by Lori Verni-Fogarsi is not a book about parenting. It's a deep look at how women lose themselves in being the perfect mom, perfect wife etc.
While I can't relate to the character's situation with her undiagnosed bi-polar husband or with her constant striving to be the perfect woman in the neighborhood, at the school, at home and at work I can relate to not having a sense of self once the kids were born. Where did that fun girl who liked to do shots and go dancing go? Who is this woman who chooses jeans based on comfort rather than style?
For many years I actually introduced myself as "Kid 1's Mom" or "the boys' mother". There are people who, to this day don't know my name- they know me as my kids' mom.
I saw many pieces of myself and probably a lot of other women in this book. It is a great read that will have you laughing, crying and looking in the mirror to determine whether you need to make changes in your life.
Do you suffer from Momnesia? Who are you? What do you like to do? Can you even remember when you listened to music that wasn't sung by adults who call themselves "The Wiggles"? It's important to take time to find out who you are, besides a mom, besides a wife and besides a businessperson. Read Momnesia and take a look at your life- figure out who you are and fall in love with yourself!
My name is Suz and I'm just an everyday woman who is trying to figure out when exactly I turned old. I'm not a doctor or an expert- what I am is a woman who wants to know for myself and to share what I learn with other women.
